Work was fairly normal but we had a math professional development meeting that started right after school and lasted until 5:30. They pay us a little extra and give us food, pizza this time, so that isn't too bad of a trade off. The meeting today was actually ok. The first half or so was a rehash of the last professional development we had at the end of last year, but it wasn't bad stuff to be reminded of and the second half was at least useful. I did appreciate that they gave us math teachers a different meeting than the other teachers. As often happens, the math department has to apply things differently to our classrooms and, were we to have been lumped in with everyone else, almost all of the examples would have been no use to us. Since it was just us math teachers, we were able to get good examples of how things would/could actually work in a math classroom.
After the meeting, I headed to our first small group meeting of the semester. Our church did some rearranging of the groups due to growth and so there were lots of new faces. There were also a lot of people. Our group was already planning on splitting up if people continue to come regularly but the large amount of people may mean that we split sooner rather than later.
After small group, I drove over to the post office. On the way I stopped at Arby's to get a snack. My dinner at 4:30 had been a long time ago and I was hungry. At the post office I got to mail something I had been looking forward to getting sent out all summer. I have been teaching for 8 years now, and the last 5 have been at Title I schools (a low income school that meets certain other requirements and gets extra government money because of it). Because of that, I am eligible to get all of my remaining student loans forgiven! It is over $13,000 that I won't have to pay back, assuming that I did everything correctly, and I was so glad to get it sent out. Now I just have to wait for it all to be processed by my loan company.
The paperwork worth thousands of dollars! |
