After breakfast and messing around for a little bit I went upstairs and started organizing. About an hour into my organizing, I got a call from my dad. Apparently last night, while she was walking the dog, my mom got attacked by a big dog. Her bit her hand and put a deep tear into her arm. She was heading into surgery, which is why my dad called. Apparently it was bad enough that they needed to put her under to clean the wounds out properly. I stopped my cleaning for a while, called some of the people I love most and had them pray with me. I then immediately got back to cleaning and worked furiously hard because there was nothing I could do (being hundreds of miles away) and knowing the best thing for me was to keep busy until I heard something.
I cleaned solidly until lunchtime and then called my sister, who said that mom was still in surgery (although she hadn't actually gone in to surgery until about an hour after my dad called me. I ate my lunch and then played a game on my computer, mostly because it is one things that can completely occupy my mind. I finally got a call from my sister saying that my mom was out of surgery but was in still in recovery and wasn't really awake yet. She also said that one reason that surgery took longer than was expected was because one of the wounds was so deep that the dog had chipped the bone a little and they had to do extra stuff to make sure that was all ok.
Apparently with animal wounds, they don't like to stitch them up, due to the possible infection from them, so my mom will be in the hospital for a few days on and IV and antibiotics to make sure they are healing properly. At that point she can then go home and, depending on the situation, she may get her wounds stitched up, or she may have to keep some dressings on them as they heal up. (Oh and her dog is just fine, she picked him up to shield him from the other dog, which is why she got hurt in the first place. I am glad for her sake that her dog is fine. If he was hurt on top of everything else, it would be much more difficult for her).
Once I got the word that she was out of surgery, my tiredness from lack of sleep last night, the effort I put into cleaning and the stress of the morning hit me like a tons of bricks and went to take a nap. Again it was a shorter nap (about an hour) but I felt better rested once I got up.
Right as my friend texted me that she was heading over to my place to do our run, it started pouring like crazy along with some serious thunder and lightening. She decided to cancel our run for today and offered to come run with me tomorrow (since my half marathon training plan has me running on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays).
That crazy loud noise at the beginning is thunder (the lightning is behind me)
Look at all that rain! |
I started off at my 12:00 minute mile pace and every so often (to keep it interesting) I raised or lowered my pace, without going below the magic 12:00 mile mark (5.0 mph on my treadmill). I managed to do the whole thing without walking at an average pace of 11:48. That's right around my second best 5K pace, so that was exciting. Since it was only 25 minutes, I only got 2.12 miles, but that wasn't bad for me.

One last update on my mom. As of around 4 eastern, she was awake in recovery but very sleepy and rather drugged up. She has a wound drain in her arm so she won't be able to leave her bed for a while. My sister and dad are with her. My sister works as a nurse in the hospital my mom is in and her husband is doing his nurse anesthetist residency there, so she will have people who can check up on her even while they are working.
Sorry about your mom, how awful that must have been! I will say a prayer for a quick recovery. ..
ReplyDeleteThanks for your prayers. We appreciate them. She should get out of the hospital tomorrow, so we are all very thankful about that!
